A Skilled and a Non-Skilled Worker — Does It Matter?

The debate of the value of workforce is a very long standing and yet continued one. There is no understating the fact that every type of workforce has a definite importance, but at the same time there is also a stigma attached with it. This stigma differentiates workforce into two different segment; skilled and unskilled. Is this differentiation any relevant in the contemporary scenario; or it is just another way of fringing various segments, without any relevant logic in the background?
Let us firstly look at the reasons for this differentiation.
· The conventional model of monetary compensation to the skilled workforce is better than the non skilled workforce. This has created a rift in the economic stature of the workers.
· There is a totally unnecessary social stigma attached with the unskilled workforce. These jobs usually require the workers to put more physical input as compared to the skilled workforce.
· The job profiles of the skilled workforce are usually more appealing to those of the unskilled workforce. This has made the people think that there aren’t any good prospects in the unskilled or semi skilled segments.
· The working conditions of the unskilled workforce are conventionally not considered favorable. Their work profiles require them to toil, which is generally not considered worthwhile by many of the people.

The flawed concept of differentiation between skilled and unskilled workforce can be owed to these stated facts. If one looks closely, then it becomes evident that these facts are basically based on the preset notions, not on any study of contemporary scenario.
Now let us see how this differentiation is not really worth in the present times.
· The unskilled and semi skilled jobs which were previously unorganized on the whole have started to become organized under the blue collared job segment. This is a highly progressive approach for these workers as organization in the job opportunities is a requisite for the sustained growth of the workers.
· Because of the availability of more job opportunities, it is evident that the monetary prospects also improve to a more acceptable level. This comes as welcome news for the workers who were being fringed just because of the preset notion of being not properly paid. The payment modules have also improved due to the fact that there is aggravated demand for the workers.
· Most of the unskilled job profiles have gradually graduated to semi skilled work profiles. This has acted as an augmenting feature for the workers in terms social and economic stature. Also as there are more prospects for growth in these segments, therefore they have come up to the level of the conventionally considered worthy job profiles.
· More people are migrating to the urban domain with every passing day and therefore the need for support staff like housekeepers is on a hike. These staff makes the lives very easy for the office goers, who are generally considered the skilled workforce. Due to the support factor, there is an increasing amount of respect for the workers, making the job worthwhile.
If we try to look closely in the comparison of the skilled and unskilled or semi-skilled work profiles, we can understand that the major issue here is not based on the actual groundwork. It is actually based on the notions and the stigma that has got attached to these job profiles. If we study the current market scenario, then it is clear that there are no definite differentiation required between the two segments.
It might be a thing of past that the workers were required to be segregated according to the work profiles. But the changed market and economic standards has made it very clear that this approach has become completely obsolete, like many of the conventional approaches. The bottom line here is that, it really doesn’t matter anymore whether a worker is skilled or unskilled, till they are trying to learn and work with dedication.
